This eponymous bookwork is my tribute to Italio Calvino’s visionary novel, which gave me a glimpse into implausible realms and was an early inspiration to me. The piece utilizes an outdated atlas whose pages are folded in on themselves, separated by miniature springs. The object is capped at top and bottom with tarnished finials like the remonim on a Torah scroll. Laid out on a velvet cloth, the book assumes an elevated importance, as though it might be presented for a sacrament.
