The publication of Manhattan Street Romance, a limited edition book of 500 copies printed in black-and-white offset lithography, marked my transition in graduate school from the strict photographic form to artists' books then to bookworks. This staple-bound, 38-page paperback uses text and images to explore the relationship between a man and a woman. Through the offset medium, the book becomes a complex piece of art, rather than simply a reproduction of photographic images. This process produces layers of transparent and opaque pages, which, when combined, reflect the various relationships of image to image, word to image, and psyche to symbols—all of which can both mask and reveal a narrative, a city, and its actors.
