Today the hardened tar on, Tar Spill, appears as a thick black splotch of spilled ink gushing over the edge of the pages, alluding to the demise of the printed word. At the same time, it evokes images of oil spills in the environment, although this piece predates the Alaskan Exxon Valdez disaster by two years.
