Transforming the book draws attention to both the literal and metaphorical aspects of the Nazi genocide of six million Jews in concentration camps. The textures of paper, ink, and sulfur are revealed through both physical touch and sight, with the work’s cluster of matches being latently “explosive.” Recalling the Nazi’s vicious culture of book-burning, the work’s combined tactile and visual irony figures both the destruction of this one book and of the Nazi’s monstrous ideals in a ceremonial fire.
