Sketch Book #7: Stitch, made between 1989 and 1996 contains both unique drawings and preliminary sketches for installations including those that appear on this two-page spread: B/Read, Garden of Knowledge, Smoking Gun, In Step, Men Ink, Ethnic Cleansing, and Who's the King of the Castle, for example. For the book covers, I randomly machine-stitched oval patterns in red thread on the outer surface of a dark brown fabric. On almost every page I painted a checkerboard-like black and white border as a design element, holding the eye within the frame as well as referencing the distinctive edges on a Mercator map. The sketchbook became my way of mapping my creative process.
