altered books, wood box
18 x 36 x 15 in.
Numerous books have had their text blocks removed, leaving only the spines, revealing the calligraphy- like black ink printed on the edges. The spines are placed into a wooden box too small to contain the number of pieces that overflow from the open side. Rather than a cornucopia of lush vegetables and fruits, this dense image is antithetical to a festive gathering. I had in mind the relocation of Jews, the proverbial “people of the book,” transported in boxcars to ghettos where they were temporarily housed in cramped “apartments” until being exported to their final destination in the death camps.
